How do I get matched with players of my level?

What does the “verified” badge mean?
- Players who have been with us for over 4 seasons immediately have a “verified” skill. This is not the visible skill level in your profile but one based on your league results and in the case of new players, the self assessment questionnaire.
- These “verified” levels are internal to our system, for now, but are tied to your spin rating (which is an experimental feature we are planning on sharing more about soon). Right now all you need to know about the rating is it helps us more easily sort divisions from one season to another and it gets recalculated after a season ends.
- A verified league player who plays one season right after another will notice their positions are determined solely by promotions and relegations. If you won your division last season you’ll be in the one above it, if you ended last, below it. Pretty simple, unless of course the number of divisions has grown, in which case other factors are taken into consideration.
- A verified player who is coming back after a break will be placed based on their verified skill level and rating. Important: Players coming back from the last season will have preference in getting placed, over verified players who skip a season so try not to skip one if you can!
What does the “new” badge mean?
- If you are a “new” player, that means you’ve never played a Spin league game before (not even in a different Spin league). You’ll be marked with a “new” badge on the standings table. This will let other players know that your skill level has not been verified by us yet.
- As a new player you’ll most likely be in an “Entry Division” these are special divisions where self assessed players are placed so we can better determine their level for a next season without affecting the other divisions. However sometimes you’ll be mixed with verified players. This all depends on the slots available in divisions at the time of sorting.
- Important: As “new” players are not “verified” we reserve the right to place them in a different division for the next season as their level gets re-assessed based on the results of the played games. If we determine the player is of a lower skill level than the one they chose, they can be placed lower, and the same for the opposite case. Sometimes we might even move “new” players to very different divisions from one season to another as that allows us to more accurately assess their results with other verified players.
How do I go from “new” to “verified”?
This is the million dollar question :). New players will get verified as soon as they have a score with at least one verified player. Our system will analyze the result and adjust the skill level accordingly when needed. This re-adjustment is based on percentage of games won so losing 0-6 0-6 to a verified advanced level when you have self-assessed as advanced will result in a much bigger readjustment than a 5-7 5-7 loss.
What if I’m in an Entry Division? How do I get “verified” when everyone else is new?
If everyone in your division is new, there will still be an adjustment to your self-assessed level once the season ends, based on your results and the average level of your division. This adjustment will allow us to place you in a non entry division the next season where you will have a chance to play “verified” players and get “verified” yourself!
Why don’t you use the WTN (World Tennis Number)?
WTN launched very recently and not all our players have one, know how to get one or what it even means. We want to remove as much friction as possible for joining our leagues and the way we do that right now is allowing players to self assess and giving them a chance to “earn” their level through results.
We are excited however about the WTN launch and will make every effort to integrate it into our system if we determine it’s the right thing to do for the leagues and our tennis community.
So is there just some algorithm sorting divisions without any human supervision?
No, not at all! (at least not yet 🙂). While we’ve invested very heavily in solving the quite complex problem of sorting divisions for hundreds of players from season to season, we know we are dealing with people, real players with concerns, questions, injuries, etc, etc. Our algorithm has made it so much easier to organise leagues and keeps getting better with time but it serves more as a starting point for sorting divisions than a final revision. Organising a league is hard! There are many players and they all want to be in the “right” division. However with a seasonal league where divisions grow in numbers in the Summer and tend to shrink in the Winter and with players not always joining every season, there are multiple factors that need to be considered. We are doing our best and investing in technology but there’s always a human behind what we do and we’re here to help with any questions and open to all feedback.
I won my division but I’m still playing some of the same players from last season. How is this possible?
We try to avoid this scenario as much as possible as it’s one we know our players feel strongly about. However, like we said in the answer above, there are cases where this simply can’t be avoided. There is one scenario where this can happen and that is when not enough players of the same level registered or came back from the previous season.
Suppose you won Division 5 last season. You open Spin and see yourself in Division 4 where you should be but some of the players you beat last season are also in Division 5. What just happened?
It’s very possible that in this new season, Division 5 had only 3 players and Division 4 only 4. Because we can’t have a division with 3 players and one with 4 we might see ourselves forced to “merge” the divisions. This merging will result in you effectively getting your promotion but also seeing some of those players from your past division you probably already beat. Most of the times we mitigate this by adding “new” players into those divisions but things don’t always go our way and there are (many) times where the Entry Divisions are full and neatly organised and there’s just no room for moving anyone.
Important: Even if you’re seeing familiar faces from the past season, there should still be enough players you didn’t play. As a new rule due to this merging scenario we won’t allow a division with more than 3 same players as the past season.
I beat someone (or lost to someone) last season and they’re in a completely different division than they should be.
First of all, good eye! It looks like that may have been a “new” player. Keep in mind we readjust “new” players skill levels after a season ends and reserve the right to place them in different divisions regardless of their promotion/relegation status. If the player was not “new” in your past division and you think there might be an issue please do let us know and we’ll take a look right away!Add content here
